About this course

Electrical engineering and electronics have transformed the way we live. We see this in everyday items like the laptop computer, television, mobile phone or MP3 player, or the lighting and equipment in our homes and work places. Less obvious, but just as important, is the contribution made to medicine, road transport, aerospace, and industry in general. This programme provides the education and training needed for holders of a relevant HND to gain an Honours degree, and hence contribute as a professional to these ground-breaking technologies.

This top-up programme is intended to give students who have successfully completed the HND or Foundation degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering the opportunity to progress to Honours Degree level.

The programme is vocationally oriented. It has been developed by the University of Derby, and benefits from their close association with local and regional industry. It is further informed by their research and scholarship profile, and their contacts internationally.

The content and structure of the BSc(Hons) Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) top-up programme is designed to provide you with an academically challenging and vocationally relevant top-up programme, building on an appropriate  HND or Foundation degree. It encompasses the main competencies needed to maintain and progress your career within industries engaged in electrical and/or electronic engineering.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught using demonstrations, laboratory sessions, lectures and tutorials.

A variety of assessment methods will be used. Some modules are assessed through coursework only, others by a combination taken from portfolios of work, case studies, oral and graphic presentations, team work projects, computer testing and examinations, so providing a flexible and effective means of assessing your progress.

As a partner student you will be granted access to the University’s online learning environment ‘University of Derby Online (UDo)’. From within UDo you will be able to access the University’s Library (including an extensive range of eBooks, eJournals, audio and video resources), course resources related to your programme and your grades.

    Course Entry Requirements

    • Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or related major (subject to approval) or
    • Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or related major (subject to approval) or
    • Successful completion of two years of a degree programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering showing the equivalent of 240 credit points at levels 4 and 5


    • Evidence of the ability to study to a higher level, for example, shown by an HND or Foundation degree profile which includes some Merits and/or Distinctions, preferably in analytical units/modules

Careers and employability

You will have a wide range of employment opportunities in electrical and electronic engineering when you graduate. You could move into areas as diverse as avionics, medical electronics, automotive electrical and electronic systems, electrical power generation, the rail industry or music and entertainment.

The numeracy and problem solving skills you will develop during this course will also give you a wide range of alternative career options, including teaching, banking, accountancy, technical sales or management.

Recent University of Derby graduates have moved into electrical or electronic system design, installation and commissioning, programming, maintenance, and related activities. Derby graduates can be found developing climate data loggers, micro processor systems in cars, safety systems for forklift trucks or railway signals.

Undergraduate funding (2018/19)

Student Finance England

Full-time study
The majority of undergraduate funding comes from the Student Loans Company and is assessed by your funding authority. Please visit Student Finance England (SFE) website pages for detailed information.



Eligible Undergraduate students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,165 to cover the full cost of their annual tuition fees. A maintenance loan (for living costs) of up to £11,354 is also available. This can be used to pay for general living costs, accommodation, travel and other course related costs.

Part-time study
If you are a part-time student on a degree course you can apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. The maximum tuition fee loan you can get if you are a part-time student is £4,625 per year. The amount you get depends on the cost of your tuition fees. Your maintenance loan will be paid at pro-rata of full time study. The amount you get depends on your household income.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your university or college.

Repaying loans

Other Sources of Funding
You do not have to apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company to fund your studies. Some students use private funding or employer sponsorship to pay for their course.

Independent Project (Engineering) [6EJ 500]

Unit type:Core

    The Independent Project is a major element of any engineering degree. It provides the necessary evidence that the student can work independently, is technically competent and is hence capable of entering the world of work as a professional engineer or technologist.

    The aim is to develop the student's ability to work independently, in a chosen topic, using relevant technical research and design concepts, and analytical, test, measurement and evaluation techniques, in order to produce a finished artefact or product. 

    The student will be expected not merely to collect, analyse and apply information, but also to exhibit other skills such as the ability to plan, manage and produce a significant technical piece of work.                             

    On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

    1. Negotiate and execute a realistic plan to deliver to agreed project outcomes, including structured approaches to planning, investigation and research, with due regard to the constraints of time, budget and available resources.
    2. Maintain an ongoing record, and write a substantial final analytical technical report containing an extensive critical evaluation of the methods adopted and the final outcome of the project.
    3. Present and discuss in a viva voce setting his/her technical project in depth, clearly communicating the critical issues and key features of the project and be prepared to answer detailed questions.

Electrical Power Systems [6EJ 515]

Unit type:Core

    This module addresses the main elements of electrical power systems and their industrial utilisation. It explains in depth the basic structure of power systems, fundamentals of AC power circuits, balanced three-phase systems, per unit systems, the main components of power systems: generators, transmission lines and transformers, symmetrical components and short circuit calculations. Power flow problems and techniques are discussed. The module concludes with some case studies of industrial applications andpower system stability.

    Industrially relevant hardware and software design skills are developed, including the use of industrial power systems test rigs, and MATLAB, SIMULINK and PSS SIGNCAL tools. A major practical and computer simulation assignment adopts a Problem Based Learning approach, with student teams being required to develop electrical power applications, to meet given tasks design specifications.

    On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

    1. Analyse and critically evaluate the characteristics of electrical generation, transmission and distribution networks, including their protection.
    2. Configure physical and simulated electrical power systems, to evaluate and optimise performance characteristics.
    3. Evaluate commercial, environmental and sustainable elements of electrical power systems.

Electronic Devices and Systems [6EJ 517]

Unit type:Core

    Electronics pervades almost every aspect of our society today, and is an essential aspect of the industrial, commercial, transport and domestic worlds. This module aims to give students the ability to recognise and apply a wide range of electronic devices and sub-systems, and to combine them together to create useful and effective electronic systems. As many electronic systems are programmable, this is an important element of the module. Circuits will be explored both by simulation and physical build.

    On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

    1. Calculate parameters associated with electronic devices and systems;
    2. Design electronic circuits and systems, to a given specification;
    3. Configure, commission and critically evaluate digital, analogue and mixed electronic sub-systems, including a programming element, in simulated and physical circuits.

Sensors and Control [6EJ 518]

Unit type:Specialist

    Sensors and control techniques play a key role in many applications. As the input to many processes, the quality of information sensors provide and the appropriate control techniques used have a crucial effect on overall system performance. This module covers elements and theory of modern control systems. It covers the fundamentals of sensors and associated circuits. It provides the students with the tools to design simulate and analyse complete practical systems. In this module the students will undertake an individual major practical assignment to design, build and evaluate a complete working system. This requires the knowledge of both hardware and software design to implement practical control systems which is provided in this module.

    On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

    1. Design, build and evaluate a complete sensing system by selecting the appropriate sensor(s), signal conditioning and data acquisition techniques to meet specific applications.
    2. Analyse and critically evaluate theoretically and practically the performance of commonly used control systems.
    3. Analyse and assess theoretical and practical issues relevant to the design and application of sensor and control systems.

Innovation in Sustainability [6ME 004]

Unit type:Core

    In this complex world innovation and creativity play a central role in the solution of problems in all branches of engineering.  They assist engineers in finding novel, sustainable and economic solutions of all shapes and sizes from modelling bridge behaviour to predicting the functionality of embedded systems in consumer products.

    This module aims to show you that an innovative and creative approach to solutions to technical engineering problems can bring value to almost any engineering activity, and how they are increasingly in demand with engineering employers.  It will help you develop some advanced skills in design and innovation so that you can apply them in ‘embedded contexts’ which reflect your own engineering discipline and career development trajectory.

    You will explore how successful innovations emerge and how do designers, technologists, managers and end-users create and apply new ideas and inventions. You will look at how these are translated into marketable products or processes and how you can combine commercial and competitive advantage with ensuring a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future. You'll work on a project individually that makes use of the ideas and methods taught in the course.

    On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

    1. Critically evaluate and apply appropriate innovation and creativity tools and techniques to solve a technical problem to achieve a sustainable future.
    2. Reflect objectively on your own career aspirations and potential professional development for the next 10 years to produce a suitable output for dissemination.
