About this course

Civil Engineers are responsible for virtually all the great structures around us. It’s the work that they do that makes or lives easier – from roads and airports, to access to clean water and electricity.

This course will develop your understanding of the process of civil engineering technical design and management. You'll be introduced to key skills in structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. Through the mix of lectures, real-life projects and site visits, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught using demonstrations, laboratory sessions, lectures and tutorials.

A variety of assessment methods will be used. Some modules are assessed through coursework only, others by a combination taken from portfolios of work, case studies, oral and graphic presentations, team work projects, computer testing and examinations, so providing a flexible and effective means of assessing your progress.

As a partner student you will be granted access to the University’s online learning environment ‘University of Derby Online (UDo)’. From within UDo you will be able to access the University’s Library (including an extensive range of eBooks, eJournals, audio and video resources), course resources related to your programme and your grades.

    • Specific requirements at GCSE: Five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths and English

Full-time study
The majority of undergraduate funding comes from the Student Loans Company and is assessed by your funding authority. Please visit Student Finance England (SFE) website pages for detailed information.



Eligible Undergraduate students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,165 to cover the full cost of their annual tuition fees. A maintenance loan (for living costs) of up to £11,354 is also available. This can be used to pay for general living costs, accommodation, travel and other course related costs.

Part-time study
If you are a part-time student on a degree course you can apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. The maximum tuition fee loan you can get if you are a part-time student is £4,625 per year. The amount you get depends on the cost of your tuition fees. Your maintenance loan will be paid at pro-rata of full time study. The amount you get depends on your household income.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your university or college.

Other Sources of Funding

Applied Mathematics 1 [UDEC FD 501]

Unit type:Core

    The primary aim of this module is to provide the fundamental analytical knowledge and techniques needed to successfully complete the core units of a construction or engineering Foundation Degree. It is also intended as a base for the further study of analytical methods and mathematics, needed for progression to a Civil Engineering Degree Programme. The module has been designed to enable you to use fundamental algebra, trigonometry, and statistics for the analysis, modelling and solution of realistic engineering problems likely to be involved at Foundation Degree level and in the workplace at technician level.

Civil Engineering Construction and Materials [UDEC FD 502]

Unit type:Core

    The role of the Engineer in the safe management and control of technology on site is vital to the successful delivery of projects. The module aims to establish and develop a base of knowledge of the technology associated with civil engineering projects, including bridges, structures and infrastructure.

    Designers’ concerns in choice and specification of components are considered along with assembly methods, against a background of regulatory controls and safety issues in the approaches and equipment deployed in civil engineering construction operations. Sustainability and environmental concerns are considered throughout the module wherever appropriate, by looking at the different methods, materials and/or better practices. An illustrative approach is used to support learning, supplemented by site visits.

Construction CAD and BIM [UDEC FD 503]

Unit type:Core

    Traditional design environments engage conventional drafting techniques to relay thoughts and ideas into reality, requiring competent personnel with considerable drafting experience. Any revisions have to be manually amended which impose constraints on resources (specifically time). The emergence of Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages have revolutionised the way that designs are transformed into reality. This powerful and flexible medium offers a forum to create, modify and present ideas/designs in a variety of perspectives. The evolution of CAD software was even more significant in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, where simple two dimensional drafting programs have been developed into integrated building information modelling (BIM) applications in the past three decades.

    This module enables you to prepare, modify and enhance designs using CAD software as the principal platform. You will be able to explore various features and functions of CAD software and apply them in the design process. It provides you with an introduction to the knowledge and skills required to use appropriate computer software as an aid to design in the built environment industry.

Structures 1 [UDEC FD 504]

Unit type:Core

    The form, purpose and performance of a proposed structure or building strategically influence the materials and components selected to provide the structural skeleton that supports its fabric. Although designers and constructors require different levels of knowledge in terms of structural behaviour, material properties and design choices, an adequate understanding of these key areas is essential if you are to appreciate the role of structural theory in both the conception and execution of permanent and temporary works.
    This module provides a framework for developing a sound knowledge of the important theories, principles, procedures and codes that form the basis of structural analysis and design. It provides you with analytical skills and an appreciation of how this knowledge might be applied in practice.

Transport Systems and CPD [UDEC FD 505]

Unit type:Core

    The module focuses on the fundamental principles of transportation systems. It introduces the concepts of transportation systems components and networks and discusses the evolution and role of urban public transportation modes, systems and services, focusing on integrated transport systems.

    Modern transportation solutions must ensure that they address challenges that have traditionally beset the transport sector, whether this is congestion, pollution or the lack of “joined up” thinking between different means of transport. This module enables you to determine whether modern transport design aims to create intelligent, integrated transport systems that work across multiple forms of transport, but must be sustainable, cost effective and have limited impact on the environment.

    This module will bring together the concepts above with the transportation policies and legislation that underpin sustainable transport solutions. The identification and integration of quality standards and implementation of systems for inspecting and monitoring are core essentials for any system and are investigated together with consideration of the design life cycle and maintenance issues.

    Additionally the module introduces Professional Development Planning (PDP).  PDP is included in every level of your programme and will build to enable you to apply confidently for graduate level employment when you graduate.  It will be integrated within your studies as training in ethical engineering, critical reviewing and report writing, delivering presentations and how you can produce a professional CV.

Site Surveying 1 [UDEC FD 506]

Unit type:Core

    Surveying techniques are of concern to many built environment practitioners – either for recording existing topographical and built features or for setting out new work. This module offers you a combination of theory based and practical fieldwork to develop a sound knowledge of the essential surveying procedures and recording protocols, linking traditional manual techniques to applications, so that you can feel confident in the modern workplace. The relevant mathematical skills will be introduced and developed contextually.  Final survey drawings will be produced and annotated and you will carry out simple setting out activities using industry best practice.

Applied Mathematics 2 [UDEC FD 601]

Unit type:Core

    The primary aim of this module is to provide the analytical knowledge and techniques needed to successfully undertake the technical elements of a Civil Engineering Degree. You will cover aspects of engineering mathematics used in the design and analysis of structures and infrastructure, geotechnics, hydraulics, and land surveying.
    The module has been designed to enable you to apply algebra, trigonometry, matrices, vectors, calculus, and statistics and probability, to the analysis, modelling and solution of realistic engineering problems found at degree level and in the professional workplace.

Geology and Soil Mechanics [UDEC FD 602]

Unit type:Core

    The interaction between structures and the soils on which they are founded is crucial to the stability of buildings. You will gain an understanding of engineering geology and how to use geological maps. This module involves you in considering various aspects of that interaction. Basic physical properties of different soils are investigated, and current methods of testing for soil performance are considered, with laboratory-based work to support learning. The module strengthens students’ ability to contribute to the safe design of buildings and structures, and to their recognition of potential challenges to safe earthworks operations in the field.
    The work and study will be further aligned to the practice of earthworks and foundation techniques applied to case study projects.

Project Management and Team Leadership [UDEC FD 603]

Unit type:Core

    A successful graduate will almost inevitably work on projects and in teams. He/she is likely to move to a team leadership and then project management role within years of graduating. Part-time students may already be in one of these roles. Engineering tasks and projects need to be delivered to meet client expectations with respect to cost, time, and quality. Participants in the process may be drawn from a variety of disciplines and trades. The success of any project depends on effective management of activities and co-ordination of interdisciplinary efforts. This module aims to provide a sound and practical introduction to the management processes and techniques required in teams, or small or large projects, to ensure a coordinated approach for effective delivery of goals.

Fluids and Drainage Engineering [UDEC FD 604]

Unit type:Core

    You will be introduced to the basic principles of fluid engineering including specific hydraulic theories related to pressure measurement in fluids, behaviour of flow in pipes, and the characteristics of open channel flow. The module will integrate hydrostatic and hydrodynamic theory with the practice of drainage design and water conveyance.

Structural Design 2 [UDEC FD 605]

Unit type:Core

    A working knowledge of the design principles is essential for the civil engineer if students are to appreciate the role of structural theory in both the conception and execution of permanent and temporary works. This module develops and enhances the previously gained knowledge of the important principles, procedures and codes that form the basis of structural analysis and design. It will provide you with analytical skills and an appreciation of how this knowledge might be utilised for understanding the structural behaviour in a civil engineering and large building context.

    Management of stocks of bridges structures and buildings are a key feature of civil engineering management in both the public and private sector. Structural assessment of these is a key skill. There is a growing need to re-use existing structures and buildings and to maximize their useful life through adaptation and strengthening. The module will provide you with analysis skills coupled with practical solutions and an understanding of the deterioration profiles of common materials.

Transport (Civil) [UDEC FD 606]

Unit type:Core

    The primary aim behind this module is to develop and control conceptual transportation solutions to ensure that they progress in accordance with project requirements. The projects will bring together relevant transportation policies and legislation that underline sustainable transport solutions. The identification and integration of quality standards and implementation of systems for inspecting, monitoring and controlling the quality of work are core essentials.  The design life cycle, including maintenance issues should be investigated and those which fails to meet the required standards should be identified with recommendations for remedial works incorporated into the project.

Independent Project [UDEC FD 701]

Unit type:Core

    The individual project is regarded as an important element of the specialist degree. It provides students in their final year with a challenge to identify and undertake an original and detailed study and present a major piece of relevant work to a critical and informed audience.

    It aims to develop your power to work independently, researching in depth a topic of their choice, using relevant concepts and techniques.

Civil Engineering and Construction Management [UDEC FD 702]

Unit type:Core

    The objective of the module is to gain an understanding of the key principles of the management of civil engineering works, projects and operations. The ability to manage across a number of disciplines and functions within a civil engineering context is an essential skill for the civil engineer in a management role.
    The working knowledge of all essential relevant legislation involving health and safety, sustainability, environmental, commercial and employment issues will be explored in detail. Practical business management techniques are also covered with the emphasis on understanding and applying the areas of technical compliance and financial control. A key element of the module will be the adoption of established techniques such as quality management, continuous improvement and innovation.
    The module will introduce the concept of professional ethics, and the link to sustainability in construction and the investigation of existing and newly developing technologies designed to address energy demand through alternative sources.
    Management of multi-disciplinary teams and organisational design will be a key feature and the module explores these issues and attempts to supply the student with the practical tools of effective organisational management and the critical evaluation techniques needed to apply them successfully.

Structural Design Project [UDEC FD 704]

Unit type:Core

    The module will integrate knowledge already gained from other modules. The aim is to allow you to work as part of a team, both individually and collectively, to carry out the design of a civil engineering structure. The types of structures could include bridges, retaining structures and tunnelling set within the context of a larger project. Design work will include calculations and drawings in sufficient detail to allow a tender to be obtained and construction work planned. The design and construction proposals will be presented to a client and the end of the module.

Geotechnics and Utility Investigation [UDEC FD 705]

Unit type:Core

    The primary aim of this module is to review the role geotechnics and foundation theory play in the competent design of development projects. It will include the study of water flow, consolidation, slope stability and the potential effect of contaminants in the soil.  In light of the increase in urban site development focus will be given to utility investigation; identification of underground services and voids related to the requirements of PAS 128.

Innovation In Sustainable Engineering Design [UDEC FD 706]

Unit type:Core

    In this module students will explore how successful innovations emerge and how engineering designers, technologists and managers develop new ideas and inventions, utilising innovation and creativity tools. Students will look at how these ideas and inventions are translated into marketable products or processes, and how they can combine commercial and competitive advantage with ensuring a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future. Students will work individually on a project that critically evaluates and applies these tools and methods in such a context.


    Additionally students will undertake a critical review of their current career aspirations for the future considering career development, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the successful management and exploitation of the potential opportunities open to them subsequent to graduation.
