About this course

In electrical engineering, we apply the fact that electricity can be used to transport and deliver energy. It lights our homes, runs many of our domestic gadgets, and keeps the wheels of industry turning. It is such an established and reliable part of our lives that we too often take it for granted, yet it remains a fascinating and developing field of study. Electrical engineering deals with the study of motors and generators and their control, power transmission and distribution systems, and the principles that underlie them. 

In electronic engineering, we apply electricity to carry, process and store information. This is the driving force behind today's information revolution, and forms the basis of everyday devices like the mobile phone and the computer, as well as a huge range of systems used in commerce and industry. Electronics depends heavily on semiconductor technology, which has led to the invention of the famous microchip. Both electrical and electronic engineering depend on the same fundamental scientific laws, but diverge widely beyond these basics.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught using demonstrations, laboratory sessions, lectures and tutorials.

A variety of assessment methods will be used. Some modules are assessed through coursework only, others by a combination taken from portfolios of work, case studies, oral and graphic presentations, team work projects, computer testing and examinations, so providing a flexible and effective means of assessing your progress.

As a partner student you will be granted access to the University’s online learning environment ‘University of Derby Online (UDo)’. From within UDo you will be able to access the University’s Library (including an extensive range of eBooks, eJournals, audio and video resources), course resources related to your programme and your grades.

Full-time study
The majority of undergraduate funding comes from the Student Loans Company and is assessed by your funding authority. Please visit Student Finance England (SFE) website pages for detailed information.



Eligible Undergraduate students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,165 to cover the full cost of their annual tuition fees. A maintenance loan (for living costs) of up to £11,354 is also available. This can be used to pay for general living costs, accommodation, travel and other course related costs.

Part-time study
If you are a part-time student on a degree course you can apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. The maximum tuition fee loan you can get if you are a part-time student is £4,625 per year. The amount you get depends on the cost of your tuition fees. Your maintenance loan will be paid at pro-rata of full time study. The amount you get depends on your household income.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your university or college.

Signal and Circuit Analysis techniques [UDEE 501]

Unit type:Core

    Signals and circuits, and physical systems in general, are represented and analysed by a range of techniques which combine an understanding and visualisation of the physical system with an appropriate mathematical technique. This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of electrical principles, and the mathematics used in their analysis. This module explores how the physical and mathematical worlds are inter-related, and how the latter can be used to represent and analyse the former, using both mathematical modelling and computer-aided design techniques.

Transport and CPD [UDEE 502]

Unit type:Core

    The module focuses on the fundamental principles of transportation systems. It introduces the concepts of transportation systems components and networks and discusses the evolution and role of urban public transportation modes, systems and services, focusing on integrated transport systems.

     Modern transportation solutions must ensure that they address challenges that have traditionally beset the transport sector, whether this is congestion, pollution or the lack of “joined up” thinking between different means of transport. This module enables you to determine whether modern transport design aims to create intelligent, integrated transport systems that work across multiple forms of transport, but must be sustainable, cost effective and have limited impact on the environment.


    This module will bring together the concepts above with the transportation policies and legislation that underpin sustainable transport solutions. The identification and integration of quality standards and implementation of systems for inspecting and monitoring are core essentials for any system and are investigated together with consideration of the design life cycle and maintenance issues.

     Additionally the module introduces Professional Development Planning (PDP).  PDP is included in every level of your programme and will build to enable you to apply confidently for graduate level employment when you graduate.  It will be integrated within your studies as training in ethical engineering, critical reviewing and report writing, delivering presentations and how you can produce a professional CV.

Engineering Workshop [UDEE 503]

Unit type:Core

    This module gives an introduction to the design, fabrication and commissioning processes of a basic electrical/ electronic engineering product. Basic electronic engineering skills such as soldering, wiring and use of electronic test gear are practiced leading on to printed circuit board (pcb) design, build and commission. These skills will then be used throughout your later studies culminating in the Independent Engineering Project in the final year.

Electromagnetic Devices [UDEE 504]

Unit type:Core

    Electromagnetism plays a significant role in electrical and electronic engineering. Understanding the principles of electric and magnetic fields and their interrelation in the form of electromagnetism is vital for understanding the field of electrical and electronic engineering. This includes capacitive and inductive components, radio communications and electrical power generation and transmission as well as physical artefacts such as loudspeakers, motors, CRT displays and relays. This module introduces the principles of electric and magnetic fields and electromagnetism, alongside key mechanical principles, and investigates how they relate to engineering applications.

Analogue and Digital Electronics [UDEE 505]

    Electronics pervades almost every aspect of our society today, and is an essential aspect of the industrial, music and stage technology worlds. This module aims to introduce and develop knowledge and understanding of analogue and digital electronic principles and their application in a variety of industrially relevant circuits enabling you to predict and analyse the performance and function of both analogue and digital circuits.  Analogue and Digital circuit design techniques will be investigated resulting in you being able to design circuits to a given specification and function.

Sustainable Energy Systems [UDEE 506]

Unit type:Core

    Sustainable Energy Systems is a module that addresses the scientific, engineering and technical aspects of global concerns about the availability of energy sources, sustainability of these sources and environmental concerns. Environmental concerns have been highlighted as the greatest challenge facing the world in this century. The module has been designed to provide the necessary knowledge and information of renewable energy resources, technology and their industrial demand. It presents a wide-ranging introduction to the field of renewable energy systems. It is mainly focussing on natural green sources of energy which can be easily converted to electrical form, energy in transport, energy & buildings and energy in various industrial process and applications. It is expected you will gain a clear understanding of the technical implications of providing sustainable electrical energy. The module prepares you for further studies in renewable energy systems, electrical power systems, electrical and electronic engineering.

Circuit Analysis [UDEE 601]

Unit type:Core

    This module is designed to develop your competence and confidence in advanced mathematical and circuit analysis techniques. Building on Level 4 studies it will deepen your understanding of circuit theorems, of the underpinning mathematics that is necessary, and of the simulation tools that can be used. The emphasis will be on developing fluency in these mathematical and circuit analysis skills, and increasing the level of complexity and sophistication with which you are able to engage.

Project Management and Team leadership [UDEE 602]

Unit type:Core

    A successful graduate will almost inevitably work on projects and in teams. He/she is likely to move to a team leadership and then project management role within years of graduating. Part-time students may already be in one of these roles. Engineering tasks and projects need to be delivered to meet client expectations with respect to cost, time, and quality. Participants in the process may be drawn from a variety of disciplines and trades. The success of any project depends on effective management of activities and co-ordination of interdisciplinary efforts. This module aims to provide a sound and practical introduction to the management processes and techniques required in teams, or small or large projects, to ensure a coordinated approach for effective delivery of goals.

Control and Instrumentation Technology [UDEE 603]

Unit type:Core

    Control and instrumentation play an important role in many areas of science and technology. Instrumentation is the cornerstone for automatic control applications. It comes in many forms ranging from domestic water heaters, automotive and to space applications. In all cases one or more variables, such as temperature, pressure and displacement, can be sensed and fed to a microprocessor or a controller to perform a control operation. Due to the rapid developments in technology and instruments more efficient measurement techniques are constantly being introduced resulting in more accurate and efficient control systems. This module presents a structured introduction to the application and development of such systems. System elements are introduced, and overall system behaviour is considered, using a mix of descriptive and analytical techniques. The systems perspective used will provide a good base for solving control and instrumentation problems over a wide range of applications.

Electrical Machines Technology [UDEE 604]

Unit type:Core

    Electrical machines provide an interface between mechanical systems and electrical systems and allow the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy and the reverse. This module provides opportunity to understand the principles, analyse the characteristics and predict the performance of electrical machines and transformers and discusses their practical operation and disposal.

Transport Engineering [UDEE 605]

Unit type:Core

    This module covers the range subject areas involved with the establishment / evolution of intelligent transport systems such as infrastructure, command and control, and operational maintenance.

    The module will also cover the human, environmental and economic factors which have to be considered both before and during such projects.

Electronic Systems [UDEE 606]

Unit type:Core

    Electronics pervades almost every aspect of our society today, and is an essential aspect of the industrial, music and stage technology worlds. With the widespread availability of sophisticated and customisable integrated circuits, most electronic design is now done at the system, rather than the component level. This module aims to give you the ability to recognise and apply important electronic sub-systems, and to combine them together to create useful and effective electronic systems. The module aims to build from a clear understanding of electronic principles, showing how these are implemented in current electronic technology. There will be a high dependence on exploring circuit characteristics through simulation. You will however also experience the building and configuring of physical circuits.

Independent Project [UDEE 701]

Unit type:Core

    The Independent Project is a major element of accredited engineering or technical degree. It provides the necessary evidence that you are technically competent and capable of entering the world of work as a professional technologist.

    The aim is to develop your ability to work independently, in a chosen topic, using relevant technical design and development concepts, and analytical, test, measurement and evaluation techniques, in order to produce a finished artefact or product. 

    You will be expected not merely to apply technical expertise, but also to exhibit other skills such as the ability to plan, manage and produce a significant technical piece of work.      

Electrical Power Systems [UDEE 702]

Unit type:Core

    This module addresses the main elements of electrical power systems and its industrial utilisation. It explains in depth the basic structure of power systems, fundamentals of AC power circuits, three-phase systems balanced and unbalanced, per unit systems, the main components of power systems: generators, transmission lines, transformers and protection units, symmetrical components and short circuit calculations. Power flow problems and techniques are discussed.

    The module concludes with some industrial case studies of industrial applications and power system stability. Industrially relevant hardware and software design skills are developed; including the use of industrial power systems test rigs, and MATLAB, SIMULINK and PSS SIGNCAL tools. A major practical and computer simulation assignment adopts a Problem Based Learning approach, with student teams being required to develop electrical power applications, to meet given tasks design specifications. There will be also a series of industrial visit to gain the practical sense of the actual system in power station.

Innovation in Sustainable Engineering Design [UDEE 703]

Unit type:Core

    In this complex world innovation and creativity is playing a central role in the solution of problems in all branches of engineering.  They assist engineers in finding novel, sustainable and economic solutions of all shapes and sizes from modelling bridge behaviour to predicting the functionality of embedded systems in consumer products.

     This module aims to show you that an innovative and creative approach to solutions to technical engineering problems can bring value to almost any engineering activity, and how they are increasingly in demand with engineering employers.  It will help you develop some advanced skills in design and innovation so that you can apply them in ‘embedded contexts’ which reflect your own engineering discipline and career development trajectory.

     You will explore how successful innovations emerge and how do designers, technologists, managers and end-users create and apply new ideas and inventions. You will look at how these are translated into marketable products or processes and how you can combine commercial and competitive advantage with ensuring a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future. You'll work on a project individually that makes use of the ideas and methods taught in the course.

Electronic Devices and Systems [UDEE 704]

Unit type:Core

    Electronics pervades almost every aspect of our society today, and is an essential aspect of the industrial, commercial, transport and domestic worlds. This module aims to give students the ability to recognise and apply a wide range of electronic devices and sub-systems, and to combine them together to create useful and effective electronic systems. As many electronic systems are programmable, this is an important element of the module. Circuits will be explored both by simulation and physical build.

Sensors and Control [UDEE 705]

Unit type:Core

    Sensors and control techniques play a key role in many applications. As the input many processes, the quality of information sensors provide and the appropriate control techniques used have a crucial effect on overall system performance. This module covers elements and theory of modern control systems. It covers the fundamentals of sensors and associated circuits. It provides the students with the tools to design simulate and analyse complete practical systems. In this module the students will undertake an individual major practical assignment to design, build and evaluate a complete working system. This requires the knowledge of both hardware and software design to implement practical control systems which is provided in this module.
