One of our priorities is to foster a new generation of responsible business leaders with a strong moral compass – forward-thinkers who take decisions based on the interests not only of shareholders but also of other stakeholders. Throughout the course, you will therefore look at the role of business in wider society, exploring issues ranging from environmental sustainability to child labour, ethical governance to responsible innovation.

Developed in close consultation with the premier professional body for managers, the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course puts you on the fast track to success. You will graduate with a highly regarded BA (Hons) Business Management as well as the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership.

With these qualifications on your CV, you will signal to prospective employers that you’re suited for senior leadership roles and rapid promotion. The Diploma is the benchmark qualification for full CMI membership and takes you a step towards Chartered Manager status. There is no need to take extra exams or coursework to achieve the Diploma: our combined module and CMI assessments give you a smooth route to both qualifications.

 Assessment                                                                       

You will benefit from an innovative variety of assessment modes. Assessment is mainly via coursework which can take forms such as traditional essays and reports, group project work, research and consultancy projects, presentations, posters, and design of digital materials. There are also in-class tests and computer-based assessments.

Teaching & Learning                                                      

We take a ‘scaffolded’ approach to learning, so you will have full support in the early stages of your course and can gradually move towards stronger understanding and greater independence. It is a smooth transition to ease your way into both HE-level study and business management practice.

Through your contact with tutors – as well as your participation in College events – you will become more attuned to professional behaviour and will build your skills in critical thinking, creativity and self-reliance before immersing yourself in the wider business community.

The course incorporates formal lectures, sometimes involving guest speakers; tutor-led and student-led seminars; one-to-one and small group tutorials; work experience projects; work-related learning and self-directed study.  By stage three, you are expected to be more in charge of your own learning, with module tutors advising and directing your studies.

As a partner student you will be granted access to the University’s online learning environment ‘University of Derby Online (UDo)’. From within UDo you will be able to access the University’s Library (including an extensive range of eBooks, eJournals, audio and video resources), course resources related to your programme and your grades.

Eligible Undergraduate students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,165 to cover the full cost of their annual tuition fees. A maintenance loan (for living costs) of up to £11,354 is also available. This can be used to pay for general living costs, accommodation, travel and other course related costs.

Part-time study
If you are a part-time student on a degree course you can apply for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. The maximum tuition fee loan you can get if you are a part-time student is £4,625 per year. The amount you get depends on the cost of your tuition fees. Your maintenance loan will be paid at pro-rata of full time study. The amount you get depends on your household income.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your university or college.

Finance and Business Performance [4AG 500]

Unit type:Core

    This module will assume no prior accounting knowledge.  You will learn how to prepare accounts for small businesses and then apply that knowledge to larger organisations. Numbers by themselves can be misleading and you will progress to examining accounting statements to assess just how well a business is performing. Managers cannot improve the performance of a business unless they make correct interpretations of situations and learn how to diagnose problems.

    Business costs will be identified and analysed to aid decision making relating to the control and viability of projects. Sources of finance will be identified and discussed.

    This basic financial knowledge is essential to anyone wishing to pursue a career in business, whether on a self-employed basis or in a larger corporation.


Business Economics [4EC 508]

Unit type:Core

    Economics is all around us, present in almost every aspect of our lives. Knowledge of economics will therefore provide you with an essential insight in to how markets work and how firms and consumers make decisions in market economies. Knowledge of economics is important to businesses as it helps them identify opportunities and potential threats they may face in the environment they operate. Therefore, this module aims to develop your understanding of the core principles of micro and macro-economics. You will use economic models, theories and ideas to investigate current economic issues. The module will help you develop your understanding of economic information and will enable you to develop your ability and confidence to create your own independent thoughts around current economic issues.


Developing an Enterprising Mindset [4GN 501]

Unit type:Core

    Enterprising individuals are necessary within the economy as they create jobs, wealth and value. These individuals do this through applying an enterprising mindset, an individual and unique combination of enterprising behaviours, attributes and skills which can be used in a variety of contexts. For instance, this could be in starting and growing a business (i.e. in an entrepreneurial context) or applying to existing organisations, whether large companies, SME’s or not-for-profit organisations (i.e. in an intrapreneurial context).

    Being able to apply an enterprising mindset is highly desirable in today’s fast moving business environment where reacting to gaps in the market or competitor actions, dealing with uncertainty, being able to make decisions and take action will all extend your commercial awareness and business acumen.  Therefore, this module is all about developing your enterprising mindset and then applying it in a real life situation. Building on and integrating the other first year business function modules, this module will overlay elements such as funnelling your creative energy, recognising the difference between a business idea and a business opportunity, deciding which approach is most beneficial, and then designing and implementing an appropriate plan of action.

    The aim of the module to help you understand the relevance and interaction of these elements within a business context, and to give you transferable skills you can apply in any organisational situation. Moreover, strong emphasis will be placed upon you to demonstrate these skills and to reflect upon your progress.


Understanding People in Organisations [4HR 503]

Unit type:Core

    This module introduces Organisational Behaviour (OB) theory and research to help students gain an understanding of the range of individual, group and organisational factors which can influence the way that employees behave in the workplace.  Students will practice applying the theory to case study organisations to explore how it can be used as an analytical tool to gain a clearer understanding of the complex causes of workplace behaviour in order to develop effective management interventions.


Understanding the Global Business Environment [4IM 510]

Unit type:Core

    Key to a successful career in business and the ability to make an impact is having an understanding of how different business departments and functions work (whether locally or globally) and how they can impact each other, such insight can be termed as having business acumen. Parallel to business acumen is having the ability to communicate effectively, network with people and demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, this can be termed as having business etiquette. 

    This module will act as a foundation in developing your knowledge, skills and professional behaviour to allow you to make the desired impact when seeking your professional career. Over 12 weeks you will be introduced to key business subject areas, and through a simulation apply your learning to a business scenario (or series of scenarios). The application of the key subject areas will further develop your business knowledge and level of acumen.

     In addition to the business subject areas you will be introduced to concepts, techniques and skills development opportunities to enhance your communication and personal presentation skills, these activities will give you more confidence in business scenarios such as networking and interviews, and are designed to give you knowledge and awareness of appropriate business etiquette. As this is such an important area when meeting employers and in the place of work, the assessment strategy takes attendance into consideration as part of the grading.


Marketing Fundamentals [4MK 514]

Unit type:Core

    This introduction to the “fundamentals of marketing” module will provide you with a basic understanding of the current and emerging marketing principles and techniques within the business environment.

     It seeks to establish that sustainable market success within a highly competitive environment can only be achieved by developing products or services based upon an understanding of the external environment and customers’ needs and wants.

     During the module you will not only consider how to add value for customers and other stakeholders but also learn to assess the impact that marketing activities have on consumers’ lives.

     Your assessment is coursework-based, designed to enable you to demonstrate your ability to approach a business challenge as a marketer and business manager. The assessment methods used on this module will also help you to develop key skills desired by employers, (who will be involved in the setting and grading of your assessment) for example digital and visual communication and presentation skills, and business report writing.  This module can also contribute to achieving the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) level 5 Diploma under the dual accreditation arrangement.  Enhanced employability is just one widely recognised outcome of membership of professional membership.


Quantitative Skills for Business [5EC 511]

Unit type:Core

    This module develops key skills for your future employment in business - the ability to use spread sheets for quantitative analysis, and the skills to interpret and communicate the results of data analysis. These are key skills required by the Chartered Management Institute. The skill base developed gives you the confidence and experience to prepare an analysis of real data to inform a business decision or underpin a business strategy. These skills also prepare you for evidenced based analysis required in other modules within your programme including finance, marketing and strategy.

    This module contributes to the CMI accreditation for BA (Hons) Business Management students.


Managing People [5HR 511]

Unit type:Core

    This module analyses the range of human resource management (HRM) activities undertaken within organisations and explores the devolution of many of these roles and responsibilities to line managers.  It provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills required to undertake these activities professionally and effectively in the workplace both working alone and within teams.  By the end of the module students will be able to conduct an analysis of their own HRM skills and construct a plan to manage their continual professional development beyond the module.


Applied Operations Management [5LO 507]

Unit type:Core

    The modern business environment is highly volatile and intensely competitive, and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The role of the operations function; how the organisation actually sources, produces and  delivers goods and services to demanding customers, becomes a key contributor to superior performance and customer satisfaction.

     The module provides a framework, to understand the crucial role of operations to business success.

     This module will provide an understanding of the systems and processes whereby, people, capital, materials, equipment, knowledge, technology, information and time are combined to produce goods and services. This module will also provide students with opportunities to experience real workplace operations scenarios where their skills and knowledge can be applied in a practical way with real organisations or in valid case study situations.

     It provides an overview of the key areas of operations management, particularly in maintaining and improving the quality of goods and services and making sure that this is also reflected in the organisations performance.

     The modern organisation cannot stand still, performance needs to be constantly evaluated and improved, against the standards expected in a changing marketplace.


PR and Media Management [5MK 513]

    Relationship Management and its implementation via Public Relations activities is an increasingly important aspect of corporate communications. Along with Marketing Communications it remains an area which stimulates wide differences of opinion as to where it lies in relation to the Marketing function of organisations. The module is designed to allow you to recognise which is the most appropriate approach given particular business contexts and the issues affecting it.

     Public Relations is about managing a Corporate image and reputation. Deciding which public(s) a company needs to engage with and which media to utilise in delivering the corporate ‘message’ are key issues that the module will equip you to make. With that understanding you will then be in a position to suggest creative ideas for an optimised PR plan that is likely to optimise a company’s corporate reputation and increase its brand equity.

     Management of Media/Press relations plays a central role in the delivery of PR activities and requires sensitive and imaginative management if these channels are to be fully utilised to the organisations benefit. This area will be explores extensively during the module allowing you to fully appreciate the interrelationship between PR and the Media. While doing this you will develop an understanding that Reputation Management needs to be an continuous on-going core activity within a company. You will also see the importance of PR in the management of exceptional (crisis) situations, Corporate Social responsibility and the needs for all PR activity to fall within acceptable legal and ethical parameters.

     The module has been formulated with the requirements of the appropriate PR professional body in mind and skills embedded that resonate with those expected by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. Your learning will be enhanced through the use of guest lectures by media professionals.


Principles of Responsible Management [5MK 520]

Unit type:Core

    This module aims to provide you with knowledge of the responsible leadership including exploring concepts of ethics, global social responsibility, and creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value for organisations and corporations.

     The module will also encourage you to consider the importance of these issues from both the organisation’s and other stakeholder perspectives. You will also reflect on the relevance of responsible leadership as a basis for sustainable competitive advantage.  The module aims to equip you with the knowledge and understanding of the complex ethical issues that are encountered by organisations on a frequent basis.


Creativity and Innovation [5NG 507]

Unit type:Core

    Being creative can be thought of as coming up with new and original ideas, whereas innovation can be defined as the development and application of these new ideas to develop new opportunities, create original products and services and to solve problems. Both of these activities are necessary for the innovation funnel to be successful. In this hands-on module you will discover how to generate new and creative ideas, and how to develop innovative products and services out of those ideas. Crucially, this may mean looking to other areas and subjects for inspiration and progress.

     To do all this, you will have the opportunity to work with other students on a real business problem, finding out your strengths and abilities, but also areas for development. You will work with an actual employer and their organisation, based in the local area, by applying your ideas, combined with the theories we will study, to promote creative solutions to issues they are facing right now.

     You are then going to present your ideas, backed up by academic references, in the form of a video presentation. The context for this innovation may be within the small firm or corporate organisation and your scope may include product, service, process, technology and marketing innovations of any kind. Being innovative, creative and confident of your own ideas is a key employability skill in today’s challenging business environment.


Financial Statement Analysis [6AG 502]

Unit type:Core

    The analysis of financial statements can tell us a great deal about the health of a company and its ability to deal with future challenges. This module concentrates on using the financial information available to assess the relative strengths of companies and to assess the impact of outside forces on their viability. Analytical and forecasting skills will be used to aid decision making.


Global Business and Strategy [6EC 513]

Unit type:Core

    This module studies the global business using a combined strategic and economic approach. As part of this module, you will explore the recent major global economic shifts and analyse current international business events. You will study the key theoretical underpinnings, trends and challenges of international trade and foreign direct investment. You will analyse the importance of government and institutions in controlling/regulating international business behaviour. This will allow you to consider the long-term sustainability of businesses in the ever-changing, and often hostile, global business environment and help you understand the critical role played by strategic management.  You will learn how to weigh up a range of complex issues like culture, leadership, corporate governance and others when developing a strategy for an international business.

    Throughout this module, you will develop critical practical skills valued by employers and professional accreditation bodies. These include selecting and interpreting data, problem-solving and decision-making, positioning analysis, and developing and evaluating strategic options. Such skills are vital for successful careers in a variety of international and domestic organisations.


Enterprise Strategy and Concepts [6GN 501]

Unit type:Core

    The module explores the need to encourage and embed an 'enterprise culture' within an overall strategic framework internal and external to the organisation. It critically evaluates through practical examples drawn from research a willingness to learn and develop from experience. It considers organisational structures which encourage corporate entrepreneurship and explores how other 'enterprise and entrepreneurial attributes' can be encouraged in the business environment.


Developing Leadership and Management [6HR 510]

Unit type:Core

    This module is about the concepts of Leadership and Management. It explores the similarities and differences in the roles and responsibilities of leaders and managers in the workplace and the development of leadership theoretical approaches as well as the practical application of these within organisations. Students will analyse the skills and competencies of effective organisational leaders and examine alternative methods of leadership development to enhance these.


Business Consultancy Project [6IM 511]

Unit type:Core

    Improvements to processes, services, products, people, and systems are core to the strategy of organisations. Improvements bridge the gap between current and required performance to add value and achieve and sustain a competitive advantage in the long-term.

    Effective consultation and project management using appropriate business improvement and research methodologies is key to the successful implementation of change.  In this module students will explore how to plan, organise, motivate, and control resources to achieve defined goals, on time and to agreed cost and quality criteria.

    Using a consultative approach, students will be challenged to make decisions based on their own research to provide practical advice and solutions to real-life scenarios taking into consideration the organisations constraints.  They will liaise with employers, establish agreed objectives and present their findings in a clear, business focused report and presentation.
