About this course

You will build on and develop the knowledge you've already gained on your HND or foundation degree in business with a further stage of study which results in a full honours degree - BA (Hons) Business Management.

Covering global and strategic management issues, you'll study the specialist areas of management and leadership. The module Issues in Global Business and Strategic Concepts is a case study of current business issues. It takes a discussion approach and is very practical. You'll be looking at where things are going wrong, what could be done, what would you do?

Throughout the course you'll be using current case studies and examples, and will also benefit from guest lectures from industry speakers and professional bodies. We'll prepare you for the workplace as you develop the skills employers are looking for in their graduate employees, from report writing and analysis through to presentation skills.

  • Past students now work for a wide range of companies from multinationals like Barclays and Shell, to small independent businesses. Some have even set up their own company on graduation.
  • On completion you could choose to progress straight on to a masters degree which is just one more year of full time study, and you'll be eligible for a 10% fee discount as a Derby graduate.

Student Finance England

Full-time study
The majority of undergraduate funding comes from the Student Loans Company and is assessed by your funding authority. Please visit Student Finance England (SFE) website pages for detail information.

Eligible Undergraduate students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,165 to cover the full cost of their annual tuition fees. A maintenance loan (for living costs) of up to £8,430 is also available. This can be used to pay for general living costs, accommodation, travel and other course related costs.

Part-time study
If you are a part-time student you can apply now for a tuition fee loan. The maximum tuition fee loan you can get if you are a part-time student is £4,500 per year.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your university or college.

Developing and Managing Performance [UDBM 500]

Unit type:Core

    People have been described as an organisations most valuable asset.  However if these ‘human resources’ are to add value to an organisation they must be carefully developed and managed to enable them to contribute effectively to its strategic aims and objectives.  To contribute positively to organisational performance employees require both the ability and motivation to do their jobs and must be placed in job roles which provide them with the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge effectively.

    This module explores how organisations use performance management, reward and development policies and practices to maximise the performance of employees and the organisations they work within. It critically analyses the role of performance review and feedback in the broader process of identifying development needs and allocating rewards and the difficulties of conducting these effectively. Students will explore the challenges of developing effective reward and employee development strategies.  From the development perspective this will include taking part in the design and delivery of an employee development event to experience the difficulties faced by organisations in developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for sustainable competitive advantage.  This will help students to assess the strengths and limitations of a range of development tools and techniques. Students will also examine the process of succession planning to ensure the effective deployment of talent.


Issues in Global Business and Strategic Concepts (Double) [UDBM 501]

Unit type:Core

    There has been a fundamental shift in the world’s economy where national economies were once self contained, now cross border business activities and economies are much more inter-dependent on each other.

    This module brings together elements of the global business environment with an understanding of the strategy making process. The ability to take an overview of business problem-solving and decision-making processes is necessary for a successful career in business management and administration. This module provides a broad representation of different, and often conflicting, perspectives and theories that reflect the richness of current debate among academics and practitioners in the field.

    Initially the module focuses on enabling students to develop skills in the analysis of the strategic environment, development, evaluation and implementation of strategic concepts. These early stages of the module are designed to develop students’ analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

    The module continues with a study of the global business environment and critical evaluation through the use of case studies to develop the student’s awareness and explore good and bad practices within the business process, content and context.

    Using a consultative approach the module concludes by addressing contemporary global issues and the inter-dependence of national economies balanced with the strategic requirements of the global organisation.


Financial Statement Analysis [UDBM 502]

Unit type:Specialist

    The analysis of financial statements can tell us a great deal about the health of a company and its ability to deal with future challenges. This module concentrates on using the financial information available to assess the relative strengths of companies and to assess the impact of outside forces on their viability. Analytical and forecasting skills will be used to aid decision making.


Principles and Practice of Leadership and Management [UDBM 503]

Unit type:Core

    As a result of the global shift in the world’s economies, cross border activities and economies are much more inter-dependent on each other. This has resulted in increasing internationalisation of accounting and finance, resulting in ever changing ethical, governance and corporate accountability issues.

    This module promises to be interesting to students of accounting and finance on many levels. It will encompass learning and mastering many of the skills required of accountants in various differing international environments and consider areas of ethics, both business, professional and personal. It will uncover just how important it is in the modern workplace to maintain clear and transparent work practices, through a comprehensive analysis of corporate governance and Corporate Social Responsibility. More interestingly it will allow students to comprehend the central working relationship that accountants and finance professionals have in the workplace, both in differing industrial or sector environments, between departments/divisions within organisations or even between organisations in differing countries.

    Using a consultative approach, students will be challenged to make decisions based on their own research into contexts, ultimately providing practical advice and solutions to real-life scenarios. It will reward enterprising accountants or finance professionals as they can adopt, challenge, create, research their own pathways for decisions made in their own professional career.


Improving Business Performance [UDBM 504]

Unit type:Specialist

    Operations Strategy lies at the heart of how organisations manage their strategic intent in practice, and is the context within which managers make strategic decisions. Operations strategy is central, ubiquitous and vital to any organisations sustained success.

    Improvements are core to the operations strategy of organisations, no matter how well they are managed. They drive initiatives to breach the gap between current and required performance of organisations to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage in the long-term.

    The key components of the improvement cycle of an organisation will include:

    • understanding how an organisation currently performs and what its overall strategy;
    • identification and prioritisation areas of improvement;
    • selection of the most appropriate improvement path, its planning and implementation;
    • selection of the appropriate tools and techniques to facilitate improvement;
    • reviewing the outcomes of improvement and  evaluation of the progress made;
    • formalisation of improvement initiatives in organisational practices, processes and systems.

    Business improvement methodologies require development and understanding of the ways in which resources and business processes can be measured, before planning improvement projects through continuous improvement or radical change.

    This module will allow students to develop an appreciation for continuous improvements efforts required by managers to ensure the success of operational and organisational strategies. Students will be introduced to a number of theoretical, methodological and practical approaches and techniques to improvement facilitation and implementation. Students will be introduced to the "cutting edge" improvement philosophy - Systems Thinking - which often addresses problems of transformation, change and redesign in organisations. It provides important connections between systems thinking, the subject (organisation) and study of organisational change.
